‘Aadhaar’ is a 12 digit individual identification number issued by the Unique Identification Authority of India on behalf of the Government of India.
Our country has embarked upon a large scale initiative to provide unique identification to every resident of India. This initiative coincides with increased focus on social inclusion and development. This scale of the initiative is unprecedented and its implementation involves active participation of central, state and local bodies as well as public and private sector agencies. ID has been envisioned as a means for residents to easily and effectively establish their identity, to any agency, anywhere in the country, without having to repeatedly produce identity and address documentation.
